TOMALES — Austin Hunter”s RBI single with one out in the top of the sixth inning snapped a 1-1 tie and lifted the Middletown Mustangs to a 2-1 victory over Tomales in non-league varsity baseball action on Monday in Tomales.

Connor Chick tossed a four-hitter, striking out 14 and walking only one.

“Connor was in command all day,” Middletown coach Mitch Tucker said. “He”s got good velocity and he keeps the ball down.”

Chick struck out the side in the second and seventh innings. He also struck out two batters in each of the first, fourth and sixth innings.

Singles by Eric Schenck (2-for-3) and Chick opened the sixth. One out later, Hunter singled down the left-field line to score Schenck from second base.

Middletown (7-5) defeated Quincy 8-5 on Saturday to secure second place at the Winters Tournament.

Winning pitcher Kyle Brown went the distance, striking out 10. He wasn”t charged with an earned run as the Mustangs committed a season-worst nine errors in the game.

Middletown staked Brown to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first and the Mustangs never looked back. They led 5-1 after three innings.

Jon Tanguay went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored to lead the Middletown offense, which collected 11 hits. Bryan Holt went 2-for-2 with a solo home run to left-center field in the bottom of the third. He finished with two RBIs overall. Schenck went 2-for-4 with a double.

Middletown plays its fifth game in six days today in St. Helena at 4 p.m. On Friday, the Mustangs open their North Central League I North schedule with a game at Fort Bragg, also at 4 p.m.
