KELSEYVILLE — The Laytonville Warriors swept the Kelseyville Knights in a non-league softball doubleheader on Thursday, taking a hard-fought opener 8-5 before cruising to a 14-1 victory in game two at Kelseyville.

Kelseyville first-year head coach Taryn O”Donnell played her regular lineup in the opener before turning things over to a lineup composed primarily of reserves in the nightcap.

“I wanted to give my younger players some playing time in a non-league, non-interlock game,” O”Donnell said.

The Knights, who are young to begin with, had a sophomore on the mound in game two, a sophomore at second base and freshman at the other infield positions.

In game one, losing pitcher Sabrina Lyon and the Knights had a 5-4 lead until the Warriors rallied with three runs in the top of the sixth inning. Lyon went the distance, striking out eight and walking four.

The Knights collected nine hits, led by a 3-for-4 day from Jennifer Green, who doubled twice and drove in two runs. Lyon went 2-for-4.

In game two, which was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule, Green pitched all five innings for Kelseyville (1-8). She struck out six and walked two.

Laytonville scored in every inning, pulling ahead 6-0 with a four-run third and then adding five more in the fourth.

Kyra Rudnick doubled in her only official at-bat. Kenzie Gould and Alyssa Mick had the Knights” other hits. Rudnick also doubled in game one.

Kelseyville plays its fifth game in four days today when it travels to Lower Lake for a North Central League I North contest against the Trojans at 4 p.m.
