LAKEPORT — The Lakeport City Council approved an application from Latinos United of Lake County for a Cinco de Mayo celebration in downtown Lakeport on May 1.

The 4-0 decision came during a brief, 15-minute regular meeting at Lakeport City Hall Tuesday evening. Councilman Bob Rumfelt was absent.

“I”m hoping they have a very successful event,” Public Works Director Doug Grider said.

Park Street will be closed between Second and Third streets from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on May 1 for the event, which will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Booths of food vendors and local groups will line the streets, while music and other cultural activities will occur in Library Park as part of the celebration.

The council received an e-mail on behalf of the Christian Science Church congregation, which holds its one-hour Sunday service starting at 10 a.m. The group asked the city to impose restrictions on the event, such as no loudspeakers, to allow for “a quiet hour for prayer,” according to the e-mail.

“We”ve never put restrictions on an event like that in the past,” said Grider, who told the council he would try to bring the two groups together to reach “a mutual agreement.”

The council voted 4-0 to approve the application as submitted, without the suggested noise restrictions.

May 1 will mark the 16th consecutive year of the group holding a Cinco de Mayo event and the third time it will be in Library Park, according to Latinos United secretary Ana Santana. The application discussion was the only piece of council business on Tuesday”s agenda.
