CLEARLAKE OAKS — Earth Day was celebrated Saturday at Clarks Island in Clearlake Oaks. The event provided an opportunity to showcase all the earth-friendly improvements currently being made at the island through the Clarks Island Sustainability Initiative (CISI).

The event was held in connection with a community clean up in the Oaks and the grand opening of the new Clearlake Oaks Visitor Center, next to Nylander Park, which operates with volunteers under the direction of the Lake County Chamber of Commerce.

Highlights of the Earth Day event included the launching of CISI”s “living dock” kayak launch, natural building demonstrations, restorative planting, Lake County Water Trails and a variety of informational booths from projects to restore the hitch habitat in Clear Lake to other areas of lake ecology and environmental concerns.

The Dock Factory, of Lakeport, which donated the kayak launch to Clarks Island, was on hand to assist with the launch. Floating Islands West, LLC was also on hand to educate guests on the benefits of floating islands. Floating islands are made from recycled PET plastic and are designed to mimic Mother Nature”s floating wetlands. They are designed to help improve water and quality and beautify waterways.

Transition Lake County hosted its monthly community potluck in connection with the Earth Day event while Shannon Ridge Winery welcomed guests at its tasting room with a complimentary glass of wine.
