TRACY — Why did the Kelseyville High School golf team cross the freeway? Simple, there was no other choice.

The Knights played on both sides of Interstate 580 on Monday while competing in the 18-team Tracy High School Invitational at the par-72 Tracy Country Club.

Kelseyville finished 14th in the 18-team field with a score 496. Host Tracy won the competition with 405 and St. Mary”s of Stockton came in second with 411.

Holes at the Tracy Country Club are located on either side of I-580 and golfers traverse the freeway twice through a tunnel located beneath the roadway.

“You could hear the sound of the trucks above you,” Kelseyville coach John Berry said. “That was different.”

On a pleasant spring day with light wind, the Knights were led by Corey Huber”s round of 84. Wyatt Ferrell was three shots back at 87.

Low round of the day belonged to Kevin Maroney of Granada High School with a 1-over-par 73.

Cloverdale 5, Upper Lake 1

At Upper Lake, Chris Colon and Alex Castillo combined on a four-hitter but the Upper Lake Cougars fell to the Cloverdale Eagles in NCL I South varsity baseball action.

The Cougars (0-4, 2-10) turned in one of their best efforts of the season against Cloverdale, which improved to 2-1 in the South standings.

“I told them before the game to go out there with the same intensity we started the season with and to focus on what they were doing,” Upper Lake coach Jim Green said.

Colon, who worked the first five innings for Upper Lake, was locked up in a pitcher”s duel with Cloverdale”s Seth Lampert until a Cougar error in the top of the fourth ? Upper Lake”s only error in the game ? sparked a three-run rally that pushed the Eagles” lead to 4-0.

Both teams scored a run in the fifth. Upper Lake”s run came on a Gage DeHeer double that brought home Castillo from second. Castillo reached base after getting hit by a pitch and he advanced to second on a passed ball.

Winning pitcher Lampert went the distance, striking out 13 and walking six.

“We took too many strikeouts today,” Green said. “That kid did a pretty good job of keeping the kids off-balance with his changeup and curve.”

Upper Lake”s defense received solid play from third baseman Larry Stacy, shortstop Stoney Timmons and second baseman DeHeer, according to Green.

Stacy made a diving stop to save Upper Lake one and most likely two runs in the top of the third inning. Timmons made two diving stops, including one where he threw out the runner at first base from his knees to end the top of the fourth. DeHeer snagged a line drive with the bases loaded and one out in the top of the seventh and threw on to first base to complete an inning-ending double play.

Upper Lake forfeits to Cloverdale

At Upper Lake, trailing 25-0 after four innings, the Upper Lake Cougars forfeited to the Cloverdale Eagles in NCL I South action.

Upper Lake would not return to the field in the top of the fifth and a forfeit was declared (games must go five innings before the 10-run rule comes into play).

The Cougars are 0-3 in league and 2-9 overall.

Lower Lake 14, Pierce 10

At Arbuckle, the Lower Lake Trojans withstood a five-run rally by Pierce in the bottom of the seventh to beat the Bears in non-league action.

Isabelle Azbill went 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs to power an 11-hit Lower Lake attack.

“She hit some shots,” Lower Lake coach Tim Sherrell said. “All of them were line drives. She really had a good day at the plate.”

Leading 4-3 after three innings, the Trojans scored four times in fourth and added a run in the sixth to go up 9-3. Pierce closed to 9-5 in the bottom of the sixth, setting the stage for a wild seventh inning during which both teams would score five times.

“We made five errors in the last inning,” Sherrell said. “It was ugly.”

Kristen Garcia earned the win with 4 2/3 innings of relief. She struck out five and walked only one.

Shadae White went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Amanda Graf went 2-for-4 with a RBI for Lower Lake, now 4-6 overall.

“We need to play a lot better in league,” Sherrell said.

The Trojans host Middletown in North Central League I North action on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
