SANTA ROSA — The Coastal Mountain Conference South golfers had Santa Rosa Country Club all to themselves on Monday as undefeated St. Vincent clinched the championship with an impressive round of 303.
“It was wonderful,” Kelseyville coach John Berry said. “It”s a classic old-time country club.”
The course, normally closed on Monday, opened just for the South golfers and it took less than four hours to complete the 18-hole round, which is “very good,” according to Berry.
St. Vincent”s team score of 303 included four rounds in the 70s, including a 1-under-par 71 by Evan Knight. The Mustangs improved to 25-0 on the season and could finish dead last today during the final South match at Oakmont West and still win the outright championship.
Middletown, led by Blaine Ruggio”s 76, came in second in team scoring with 379 and Kelseyville had 392. Rincon Valley Christian was incomplete (fewer than four golfers), while both St. Helena and Calistoga were no-shows.
“There was concern at St. Helena that they (team members) would be missing two days of school this week to play golf,” Berry said. “So they let me know they wouldn”t be showing up today.”
Ruggio”s round included three birdies as Middletown improved to 18-7 in the South standings. Kelseyville is third at 14-11. Daniel Eagle also had a 93 for Middletown with one birdie.
For Kelseyville, Corey Huber carded an 82 with one birdie and Wyatt Ferrell was one shot behind at 83, also with one birdie.
Going into today”s final South match, conference season scoring leaders outside of champion St. Vincent are Rincon Valley Christian”s Kasey Cazet and Middletown”s Ruggio.
Cazet fired an even-par 72 on Monday.
