LAKEPORT — The Lake County Board of Supervisors (BOS) adopted and later presented five separate proclamations during Tuesday”s regular meeting at the Lake County Courthouse.

The proclamations commended one county employee for her longtime service, and recognized May as an awareness month for military appreciation, perinatal depression, homeless youth and mental health.

The BOS adopted the five proclamations as part of the 13-item consent agenda. The presentations were among the primary pieces of business on the regular agenda, and each Supervisor read aloud one of the proclamations.

BOS Chairman Jim Comstock, a U.S. Navy veteran, presented the declaration of May as National Military Appreciation Month as nearly 20 other veterans and two active servicemen stood across from him.

The Supervisors, county staff members and people in the audience stood and applauded the current and former military personnel after Comstock read the declaration.

District 4 Supervisor Anthony Farrington read the next proclamation, which designated May as Perinatal Depression Awareness Month.

Representatives from several local organizations, including Mother-Wise, First 5 Lake and Redwood Children”s Services, stood for recognition during the presentation.

Depression during and after pregnancy is an issue for as many as 20 percent of mothers and can negatively impact the mothers and their families if untreated, according to the proclamation.

District 2 Supervisor Jeff Smith then read aloud a proclamation designating May as Homeless Youth Awareness Month.

The proclamation stated that according to the 2000 U.S. Census and annual updates, Lake County has roughly 3,000 residents between 16 and 19 years old, 22 percent of which are homeless and 12 percent of which are neither employed or in school.

District 5 Supervisor Rob Brown presented a proclamation commending Laura Solis, who worked for 22 years as part of the Alcohol and Other Drugs Services (AODS) program.

The BOS commended Solis for her dedication to the field, personal connection with program clients and work on Team DUI.

Solis, who officially retired Monday, said she appreciated the support from the BOS, county officials and area residents.

District 3 Supervisor Denise Rushing presented Tuesday”s final proclamation, which designated May as Mental Health Month.

The proclamation encouraged people countywide to increase awareness and understanding of mental health while also being cognizant of their own mental health.

The Lake County Mental Health Department will celebrate the month with two similar lunchtime events.

The department will provide a healthy lunch, entertainment and information. Consumer art will also be available for sale.

The events will occur on May 19 in Library Park in Lakeport and May 26 in Austin Park in Clearlake. Both events will run from noon to 1 p.m.

An incorrect draft of the meeting”s agenda was posted on the county”s website on Monday, listing items not officially scheduled for Tuesday.

As a result, the Record-Bee”s meeting precede brief, which appeared on Tuesday”s front page, described a proclamation not presented Tuesday. The BOS will present a proclamation designating May 21 to 27 as Safe Boating Week at a future meeting.
