LAKE COUNTY — A veterinarian and animal rescue advocate want to locate the owner of a young female yellow Lab mix that was found struggling on the side of the road on Thursday.

“This is one of the worst intentional dog abuse cases I have seen in the 15 years I have been in Lake County. Most of the abuse is negligence. This one actually took a lot of work. Instead of using a collar, these people figured that they would just tunnel a hole through the dog”s skin,” Veterinarian Chris Holmes of Wasson Memorial, said.

Dog rescuer Katy Walker of Walker Rescue found the dog running down Soda Bay Road near Finley and brought it to Holmes who “removed the dead infected skin, since the chain link was blood/rusted shut and couldn”t be opened,” Holmes said.

The dog spent the night at the vet”s office and is expected to be put up for adoption.

Animal Control will be investigating the case. Holmes hopes someone will recognize the dog and come forward. He would like to see prosecution occur for the person/people responsible.

“In my 10 years of rescuing up here I have never seen anything like this. It is sadistic and unconscionable. There is no reason for this,” Walker said. “She”s so sweet, even with all she has endured and remains loving through the painful ordeal.”

Anyone with knowledge of the person who abused the dog is urged to call Walker at 279-4120. Callers may remain anonymous.
