Friday deadline for June”s juried art show

LAKEPORT ? Gail Salituri, the judge for the Lake County Arts Council”s juried art show “The Lake County Landscape,” reminds artists that they still have time to pick up entry forms from the Main Street Gallery in Lakeport. Artwork will be received from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at the Main Street Gallery. Judging will take place on Monday. Salituri”s selections of art for the show will hang during June in the Linda Carpenter Gallery. Two awards of $50 each in merchndise from the Main Street Gallery”s gift shop, will be presented during the First Friday Fling on June 3.

Art in Public Places accepting work Thursday

LAKEPORT — The Lake County Arts Council (LCAC)”s Art in Public Places is a program offering local professional and non-professional artists an opportunity to display their works in high-visibility locations in Lake County. The artwork may include oils, acrylics, photographs and mixed media, all of which have been securely prepared for hanging. The program can only accept artwork that can hang.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. only, on Thursday, Lake County Arts Council staff will receive work in the main lobby of the Lake County Courthouse. All works received will be hung in the courthouse as space allows and also Lakeport City Hall on Park Street.

Another location for Art in Public Places is the Lake County Visitor Center in Lucerne. To learn more about hanging work at this location, call the LCAC office, 263-6658, and request more information.

May 19 is also the only time for picking up artwork from the prior show. This new exhibit will show through Sept. 15. The LCAC will handle art sales through its gallery. Artwork in these exhibits should not be removed without notifying the LCAC beforehand.

Art in Public Places welcome new exhibitors. There is a small fee of $1 per piece to enter work and there will be a 20-percent commission paid to the Lake County Arts Council by members and 30 percent by non-members should any work be sold. Work may be for sale or just to show. Membership is not required, but the LCAC encourages all those interested to become committed members and financial supporters. ”Hairspray” to be performed in Lower Lake

LOWER LAKE — The Konocti Unified School District (KUSD) drama program presents its spring musical, “Hairspray,” 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday in the Lower Lake High School auditorium. Tickets cost $8 for students, $9 for senior citizens and $10 for adults.

According to drama instructor Tracy Lahr, the musical cost between $8,000 and $9,000 to produce. The district is accepting donations to assist with the cost. For information, call Lahr at 295-7806.

Third Friday Live showcases local performers

LAKEPORT — Third Friday Live presents the latest in its monthly concert series, The show starts at 7 p.m. Friday at the Soper-Reese Community Theatre, 275 S. Main St. in Lakeport.

This monthly event gives Lake County artists the opportunity to take center stage. May”s concert features Uncorked!, a five-piece musical group specializing in fiddle melodies of all styles. Don Coffin, the KPFZ 88.1 FM Bluegrass DJ, plays guitar, the mandolin and sings. Dennis Hadley plays the accordion and is a veteran of several Cajun and Zydeco bands in Northern California. Dan Harris plays guitar, the mandolin and banjo. Andi Skelton, a private string instructor and concertmaster of the Lake County Symphony, plays the fiddle and viola. Completing the quintet is Eleanor Cook, the assistant director of the CLPA Youth Orchestra and a member of the Lake County Symphony. Cook plays fiddle, cello, trumpet and penny whistle.

Opening for Uncorked! is another local group, Cobb Stompers from Cobb Mountain. This group is composed of Patricia Jekel, fiddle; Dock Jekel, banjo; Scott Serena, guitar and mandolin; Tamsen Nash, washboard and autoharp. More information is available on the band”s website at www.cobbstompers.com.

All seats for Third Friday Live are $10. Tickets are available online at www.SoperReeseTheatre.com or at the theater box office, open from noon to 5 p.m. on Thursdays and for two hours before showtime on the day of the show. Vikings of Lake presents music concert

CLEAR LAKE RIVIERA — Knut Erik Jensen returns for his third musical engagement, 2 p.m. Sunday in the Galilee Lutheran Church sanctuary, 8860 Soda Bay Road in Clear Lake Riviera.

Jensen”s performance is sponsored by The Vikings of Lake Lodge No. 6-166, Sons of Norway.

Jensen, originally from Hell, Norway, will entertain listeners vocally, on piano and with accordion.

A reception takes place in the fellowship hall following the performance. Attendees will have an opportunity to meet the artist, enjoy sm?rbr?d (Scandinavian open-faced sandwiches), Scandinavian cookies, coffee and tea. Wine will be available for purchase. The Norwegians celebrated their “Constitution Day,” Syttende Mai, on Tuesday.

The suggested donation is $10 per person. Proceeds will help benefit the Adopt-a-School Program, which provides book bags with supplies to needy students in Lake County.

Auction of Sherf collection takes place Sunday

LAKEPORT ? The Lake County Arts Council will be holding an auction of works of art from the well-known collector Jerry Sherf at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Main Street Gallery, 325 N. Main St. in Lakeport.

There will be a live auction of 30 pieces and a silent auction of many more. The auction will be conducted by Bert Hutt, who has served at all of the previous auctions at the Main Street Gallery.

The live auction is expected to take about an hour. Doors will open at noon. Refreshments will be served to all who register to bid.

The work will be available for preview from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day, beginning Tuesday and continuing until the auction, in the back of the Main Street Gallery.

Sherf had a large collection of works from Lake County artists. According to LCAC webmaster Xian Yeagan, Sherf tried to have at least one piece of artwork from each and from some whom he favored he had many examples. He was well-liked by many artists and he would go out of his way to help them by hanging their work and lending them frames and materials. Sherf died around the first of the year, after a long illness. He will be missed by many. For more information, call the Main Street Gallery at 263-6658.

Bill Noteman and the Rockets to play in Ukiah

UKIAH ? Bartlett Hall in Ukiah begins its 2011 dance music series on Saturday with Bill Noteman and the Rockets. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the dance show begins at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $15 per person, with a credit card option available for pre-event ticket purchase. Appetizers from Ukiah-area cooks, chefs and caterers are included in price of admission. Reservations are required. Beer and wine will be available for purchase. LCTC holding auditions for September show

LAKE COUNTY ? Lake County Theatre Company will hold auditions for the comedy, “The Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen”s Guild Dramatic Society Murder Mystery,” 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and May 26 at the Little Theatre on the Lake County Fairgrounds and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 28 in Weaver Auditorium at the Lower Lake Historic Schoolhouse Museum. Ending times are subject to change depending on turnout.

There are parts for four women and one man; performances will be in September. Applicants are encouraged, but not required, to prepare two contrasting 2-minute monologues. For more information, call Sue or Mill Garrett at 998-0224.

?Christmas in July” invites vendors

LAKEPORT ? Local artists are encouraged to take part in the Lakeport Senior Activity Center”s “Christmas in July” craft show, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 16. Handcrafters from all around the lake are invited to rent a space at the show. A total of 30 tables are available and the fee is $25 per table.

Food will be available at the show and entertainment from local groups. The art students at the center will provide a show of their creations.

The garden and playground will be open for playing horseshoes and lounging in the shade. Anyone interested should contact event co-chair Pam Plank at 272-3665.

Applications can be picked up at the senior center or the Meals On Wheels Thrift Store at 560 Lakeport Blvd. in Lakeport. The deadline for registering is June 24 with both the application and fee. For more information, contact Pam Plank at 272-3665.
