LAKEPORT — On July 4 David Shields, a 67-year-old Lake County resident said he and his leashed dog were attacked in Library Park at about 2:30 p.m. by a pitbull that was allegedly running loose. The dog was leashed but possibly unattended to by owner.
A Hopland man came to his aid to get the pitbull off of him and his dog, according to Shields.
Shields said that someone who was apparently with the pitbull”s owner allegedly came up and punched him in the face.
Shields said that when he told the woman who owned the dog, Loni Bennett, 24, of Upper Lake, that he needed information from her because he was calling the police, she ran.
Shields said he followed her to her car and he alleged that she tried to run over him and allegedly did bump him with her car. Shields went to Sutter Lakeside Hospital, transporting himself at a later time. He refused medical treatment on scene. His dog required veterinary care. Several witnesses were contacted by the Lakeport Police Department (LPD).
Animal control has released the pitbull to Bennett with quarantine requirements.
A case has been submitted to the Lake County District Attorney”s office by the LPD.
