LAKEPORT — Road conditions were at the forefront of county officials” minds Tuesday, as Public Works Department staff updated the Lake County Board of Supervisors (BOS) on the 2011 pavement maintenance program.
County road crews are “going to be busier than ever” completing routine street maintenance projects this summer, Public Works Director Scott De Leon said during Tuesday”s regular BOS meeting.
Public Works crews will be increasing the amount of routine maintenance done during the summer while decreasing the number of chip seal projects, De Leon said. “I think we needed to just scale back a little bit,” he said of the county”s chip seal program.
Workers will be patching potholes, sealing cracks, rejuvenating existing pavement with fog seal and doing some chip seal preparation work during the rest of the year, in addition to carrying out a few chip seal projects, De Leon said.
Public Works proposes to perform chip seal projects on more than a dozen major collector roads during 2012, De Leon said.
The Supervisors commended road crews for specific work already completed in their individual districts as well as the department”s road maintenance outline for the next couple of years.
County General Fund allocations will support a number of Public Works road projects during 2011.
Those projects include fog seal work to portions of Soda Bay Road and Gaddy Lane, and all of Westlake Drive, Buckingham Drive, Peninsula Drive, Orchard Drive, Buckingham Court and Richard Court.
Chip seal preparation work will occur on portions of Bottle Rock Road, Sulphur Bank Drive, Hartmann Road, Merritt Road, Konocti Road and Soda Bay Road. Chip seal projects will be done on portions of Country Club Drive and 13th Avenue.
Additional Public Works projects will be completed using other funding sources.
Local Road Impact Fee revenues will fund proposed pavement preservation work on Lakeshore Boulevard from Park Way to Hill Road in North Lakeport, as well as on Fairway Drive and Hawaina Way in Clear Lake Riviera.
County Service Area No. 23 benefit zone revenues will provide funding for projects on local roads in Kelseyville, Middletown, Clearlake Oaks and Cobb.
Public Works staff will also be involved with several miscellaneous projects during 2011. Those projects include Wildcat Road Bridge repair, Lake Transit Authority bus stop improvements and storm damage projects on Elk Mountain Road, Morgan Valley Road and Socrates Mine Road.
Looking forward to 2012, chip seal projects are proposed on portions of several major collectors, including Loch Lomond Road, Point Lakeview Road, Elk Mountain Road, Hartmann Road, Lakeview Drive, Sulphur Bank Drive, Merritt Road and Soda Bay Road.
Public Works also proposes projects on roads not listed above.
“Performing the right road maintenance to the right road at the right time is critical to prevent further deterioration of our county road system. While available funding for road maintenance falls well short of the amount needed to prevent that deterioration, Public Works will continue to plan road maintenance projects in order to maximize the service life of our roads,” according to De Leon.
