MENDOCINO COUNTY (MNG) ? A child about 10 years old was killed in a crash Wednesday afternoon on Highway 20 near the halfway point between Ukiah and Fort Bragg, in one of two crashes in the area in the last two days, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

The child died in a crash at about 2:37 p.m. Wednesday, according to CHP Sgt. Jerry Elrod.

According to a CHP press release, a 16-year-old boy was driving a Honda Accord eastbound on Highway 20 about one mile east of Chamberlin Creek with two approximately 10-year-old passengers, one up front and one in the back, when he slowed to 20 mph to make a left turn into a private driveway.

Coming the other way was Billy Doak in a grey Ford F-150 with an unidentified woman passenger. Doak was going 40 to 45 mph when the 16-year-old made the left turn in front of him.

Doak braked but was unable to stop and hit the right side of the Honda. The 10-year-old in the front right passenger seat was flown to Oakland Children”s Hospital with major injuries.

The boy in the right back seat was declared dead at the scene. There were no other major injuries.

None of the names of the juveniles have been released. All parties were wearing seatbelts. No alcohol or drugs were reported as part of the accident.

Another crash in the same area:

A three-car crash at 3:55 p.m. Tuesday involving a Safeway big-rig that overturned sent a 55-year-old Willits man to the hospital, according to England.

Arthur Judice was driving a 1998 pickup west on Highway 20 near milepost marker 15.57.

For unknown reasons, Judice crossed double, yellow lines and hit the driver”s side of an oncoming Peterbilt, Safeway big rig, England said.

The truck overturned in the eastbound lane and on the shoulder of he highway, he said, and Judice continued west in the eastbound lane, hitting an oncoming Buick behind the Safeway truck.

Judice was taken to Howard Memorial Hospital with moderate injuries, according to England. No other injuries were reported.
