UPDATED:

Many of you may have noticed that the hanging flower baskets in downtown Lakeport have struggled in the summer heat this year and many have been lost altogether.

The Lakeport Main Street Association funds this project, supplying and maintaining more than 90 baskets each year at an expense amounting to more than $6,000.

We love doing this for our community and want to continue for years to come.

But this year has been a real challenge. Last month, we lost 20 baskets on Park and Third streets because of a mechanical failure in the automated watering system.

It was heartbreaking to see all those dried up flowers. However, through some creative thinking we were able to replace more than half of them at no additional expense.

But more disaster was to come. Last week we lost another 30 baskets when a vandal removed a battery from the water timer on Main Street. It was a small, thoughtless act with devastating effects. Seeing all those dead baskets was so depressing. We can”t bear to think that further losses might occur.

We ask all of you to help by immediately reporting any basket that looks like it”s in trouble or any activity that looks suspicious. Contact us at 263-8843 or info@lakeportmainstreet.com.

Thank you and we hope you are enjoying the baskets that are still up and in bloom.
