UPPER LAKE — Members of the Upper Lake High cross country team made a two-day team-building trip to Angel Island State Park last week.

All runners took a quick ferry ride over from Tiburon to Angel Island, which transported them back in time to when fortresses were operating on the bay to protect the Golden Gate from the Confederates.

The team backpacked into some primitive campsites and began the difficult task of setting up tents in 30 mph winds.

After setting up camp, the team did a 3-5 mile run up and around to the summit of Mount Livermore, which is 800 feet above the bay and has some great views.

After a windy night, the team struck camp and did a six-mile run completely around the island. On the run they visited Civil War gun emplacements, Nike Missile site, the old immigration station and great views of the Golden Gate.

After the run the team hiked out, caught the ferry back and were then treated to a trip to the Marine Mammal Rehab Center, a hospital near Sausalito for marine mammals.
