I liked Mac McKay”s letter the other day, but he only got half of Winston Churchill”s quote. The entire quote was that Americans were always known to do the right thing, after they had exhausted all other possibilities. I don”t think I”m the only one getting exhausted by watching the current political stalemate.
It reminds me a little of the French movie “King of Hearts.” During WWI the town was evacuated when the battle was nearby and all the inmates from the local insane asylum got out and took over the town. The inmates did a better job than the sane people. At the end of the movie, after the soldiers slaughtered each other, the inmates calmly returned to the asylum on their own.
It seems that the lunatics are running our government now and not very well. I can”t comprehend how anyone can defend the insane spending orgy our government is engaged in, $4 billion a day more than revenues.
We work almost half the year to pay the obvious taxes and for higher prices on everything because of hidden taxes. Then the bureaucrats, on becoming a government worker, by some miraculous process, become endowed with the wisdom to decide the “best” way to redistribute our money. Wasteful and counterproductive spending puts the brake on the economy and still the government employees have a job and those in need are still needy. That is the real trickle-down economics.
It may sound clich?, but the road to Hell is paved with good intentions. We keep voting for more government because the reasons sound good at the time, but we”ve gone too far down the road and have finally met the guy melting the asphalt.
Since WWII, there has been unprecedented prosperity, with little need to say I can”t afford it. We just say charge it. Well it”s time for our nation to grow up and live on a realistic budget. A ceiling is usually rigid, but our debt “ceiling” is more like a storm cloud hovering above us. We need to evaporate it, not keep raising it. It”s not a limit if it keeps moving.
Because of advances in biology our children may live to be 200 years old ? will they have to work two jobs for that long to pay off our debt?
I hope we”ve exhausted all the possible ways to screw up ? it”s finally time to do the right thing.
