CONCORD — Swimmer Charlie Adams added another achievement to his impressive career r?sum? on July 27-31 while competing in Pacific Swimming”s Long Course Far Western Championships in Concord.
Adams, 10, a member of the Lake County Channel Cats, won medals in the 400-meter freestyle (sixth) and the 200 freestyle (eighth) to become the first swimmer in the 40-year history of the Channel Cats to bring home a medal from Far Western competition.
Adams stepped up a level in competition at the Far Westerns, which brings together the best talent in the western United States.
Despite a lack of training in a 50-meter competition pool (the Westshore Pool in Lakeport is just 25 meters long) and very limited long course racing experience this season, Adams qualified for entry in seven individual events ? the 100, 200 and 400 freestyle, the 50 and 100 backstroke, the 100 butterfly and 200 individual medley. During the course of the five-day competition, he swam faster than ever before and reached the finals in both the 200 and 400 freestyle.
Adams set PRT times in the finals of both events in the 10-and-under division. He clocked in at 5 minutes, 25.81 seconds in the 400 and 2:34.43 in the 200.
The Channel Cats swim daily at the Westshore Pool in Lakeport. Space is available and sign-ups are ongoing for team and youth fitness swimming programs. For more information view the website at www.lakecountychannelcats.com or contact team president Jen Hanson at 263-3131.
