UPDATED:

MIDDLETOWN — The Middletown Unified School District Board of Trustees approved a few new positions at its first meeting of the month Wednesday.

The board unanimously approved appointing Thad Owens to principal at Middletown Middle School. Owens had been the dean of students at Middletown High School. The principal position had been vacant since June following the resignation of Dan Morgan.

Superintendent Korby Olson said the district would look to fill Owens” previous position as soon as possible.

The board unanimously agreed upon a job description for a part-time occupational therapist for the district. Olson said the district has employed an occupational therapy assistant in the past through a contract agency.

He said someone had recently moved into the Middletown area with experience in the field. He wanted to get the job description approved so interviews for the position could begin. The district had talked about sharing an occupational therapist with the Konocti Unified School District, Olson said, but it would not have worked out.

The board unanimously approved the creation of a Tuesday-through-Saturday maintenance/custodian position. Olson said someone in this position had retired a few years ago and was never replaced because of shrinking budgets. Since then, he said the maintenance department had been reduced to “bare bones” and needed some help.

Olson said it was important to bring the position back by saving the district on overtime costs and by providing the maintenance department greater flexibility. Board members Yvette Sloan and Lynette Carrillo said it was a good idea, and board president Bill Wright agreed. The district will begin looking to fill the position.
