Team DUI has been in existence for five successful years, educating our youth on the true realities of driving under the influence. Through the efforts of many, we have made a positive impact in the lives of our youth. Through Team DUI, our youth are better prepared to cope with the pressures of underage drinking which ultimately helps to save lives and prevent injuries.
The new school year is beginning. Team DUI is facing challenges as we work earnestly to keep this vital program continuing.
The biggest challenge Team DUI continually faces is acquiring speakers for our presentations. Throughout the years, our numerous speakers have unselfishly and courageously given of themselves to help safeguard our youth and others.
The emotional toll on speakers varies as they continuously share their true-life emotional stories, which can sometimes cause feelings of burnout. It is also very important to keep things fresh so our youth are not hearing the same stories and become numb to them. This is why it is so important to have an adequate pool of speakers to draw from.
This past school year was difficult acquiring enough speakers to do all of our presentations. It usually takes three speakers plus our California Highway Patrol moderator to do a presentation.
The services of Team DUI are being requested from all middle schools, high schools and alternative schools throughout Lake County. The volume is noteworthy.
The mission of Team DUI is of great importance to the safety of all Lake County residents. While it is easy to say that we must continue on with our mission, the reality is that we also must be prepared to follow through, fulfilling the requests of our schools. Without enough speakers coming forward, this cannot happen.
I encourage anyone whose life has been impacted in one way or another by a DUI incident, whether the repercussions affected offenders or victims, to share their story. Your story can help make a difference with our youth, which can ultimately save a life.
Each of us fulfills a different role, but when we work together, our message is very powerful.
