LAKEPORT — Savannah Dekeyser scored three times and added two assists as the Clear Lake Cardinals overpowered the Upper Lake Cougars 10-0 in non-league varsity girls” soccer action on Tuesday at Lakeport.
Clear Lake improved to 4-0-1 with its fourth shutout of the season. The Cardinals have allowed only one goal through their first five games.
“The defense was pretty solid,” Clear Lake coach Paul Larrea said. “And our midfielders do a great job,” he added of Emily Norwood, Chelo Lundquist-Krag and Kelcie Reynolds.
Clear Lake led 4-0 after the first half.
Madison Wynacht, called up from the junior varsity team, scored her first two varsity goals. Norwood and Kristy Hayes added two goals apiece and Faith Hornby scored her first varsity goal.
“We played well,” Larrea said. “We have a nice blend of juniors and seniors.”
“Clear Lake is pretty good,” Upper Lake coach Mike Sheets said. “They hit some beautiful shots.”
Hannah Johnson, a first-year soccer player, had nine saves in the net for Upper Lake.
“With only five returning players and 10 new girls, we”re doing better,” Sheets said.
Boys” soccer
Roseland 5, Middletown 4
At Santa Rosa, Jesus Garcia scored twice and Eric Lopez and Cody Astley added goals for the Middletown Mustangs in a non-league loss to Roseland Prep.
Roseland Prep played a man short (10 players) the entire game for disciplinary reasons.
“We were going to only play 10, but they asked us to play 11,” Middletown coach Chuck Rannells said. “They wanted to teach their kids a lesson.”
Roseland Prep took a 3-0 lead in the first half although Middletown (0-2) closed to 3-2 by halftime.
One of Garcia”s goals came on a header off a corner kick by Shawn Fromer.
Joseph Foster turned in a solid game at defense at right-centerback, according to Rannells.
“I was pretty pleased,” Rannells said of his team”s overall effort.
Volleyball
Ukiah def. Kelseyville
At Kelseyville, the Kelseyville Knights got off to a slow start and never recovered, falling 25-20, 25-23, 25-23 to the Ukiah Wildcats in non-league varsity volleyball action.
“Growing pains, nerves,” Kelseyville coach Donelle McCallister when asked about her young team”s play early in the match. “We”re working out some kinks.”
Jeannie Johnson led the Knights with six kills and Kyra Rudnick had a team-best nine digs.
Clear Lake def. Healdsburg
At Healdsburg, Haley Garzoli”s kill ended a 2 ?-hour marathon as the Clear Lake Cardinals notched their first win of the season with a 12-25, 25-20, 25-23, 20-25, 18-16 victory over the Healdsburg Greyhounds.
“They did great,” Clear Lake coach Marci Psalmonds said of the Cardinals (1-1). “Once we started blocking them, we shut ”em down. We had 13 blocks, which is big. I don”t think I”ve ever had that many blocks before in a match.”
Jessica Asbury led the Cardinals with 13 kills and four blocks while Anna Westin added nine kills and six blocks. Garzoli finished with five kills and Briana Campbell and Coree Alexander chipped in with four kills apiece. Hannah Boyd had three blocks.
Alexander and Morgan Pslamonds teamed up for 19 digs to anchor the defense while Psalmonds had 32 assists from the setter position.
Clear Lake rallied from an 8-2 deficit in game five.
Middletown def. Upper Lake
At Middletown, Nika Gibbs pounded away at the net (seven kills) and from the service line (nine aces) to lead the Middletown Mustangs past the Upper Lake Cougars 25-16, 25-16, 23-25, 25-19 in non-league action.
Rachel Sutton also came up big for the Mustangs with 24 service points and six aces. She reeled off nine straight points in game four as Middletown rallied from an 18-8 deficit to win.
“I”m really excited about what I”m seeing,” Middletown coach Suzanne Riccio said.
Middletown is 2-1.
Kat Edmonds had 12 kills, three blocks and three aces to lead Upper Lake (1-1).
