BOONVILLE — Playing in the teeth of triple-digit heat Friday afternoon, the Upper Lake Cougars tied Anderson Valley 1-1 in a non-league varsity girls” soccer game where tempers soared along with the mercury.
“They were cussing at us in Spanish,” Upper Lake coach Mike Sheets said. “And a fight nearly broke out at the end of the game.”
One Upper Lake player who objected to the profanity was red-carded, according to Sheets.
“I guess the officials didn”t know what their players were saying,” he said.
“The sportsmanship was very, very poor,” he added.
Upper Lake (3-2-1) trailed 1-0 until Shayla Wyman scored with 10 minutes left in the game. Krista Coleman assisted on the goal.
Standouts for the Cougars were Wyman, who had eight shots on goal, keeper Hannah Johnson (four saves), Coleman, Sheyla Ayala, Jamie Henry and Tanya Carter, who took a ball off the face, according to Sheets.
