LAKEPORT — Wasting no time at all on Tuesday, the Clear Lake Cardinals swept the Upper Lake Cougars 25-19, 25-23, 25-19 in a non-league varsity volleyball match at Lakeport.
Clear Lake improved to 2-1 on the season with its second straight win. Jessica Asbury led the Cardinals with 17 kills and Anna Westin had five kills and two blocks.
“We didn”t play defense like we normally do but we got the job done,” Clear Lake coach Marci Psalmonds said. “We served real well.”
With the score deadlocked at 19 in game one, Hannah Boyd served six straight points to give the Cardinals the win. In game three, Morgan Psalmonds reeled off six straight points at the service line to put the Cardinals in front 24-18. Both Boyd and Psalmonds finished with four aces overall.
Kat Edmonds led the Cougars with six kills, an ace and eight digs. Teammate BobbieLynn Collins added six kills and three blocks, Amber McQueen had five kills, and Olivia Carter had 12 digs and two blocks.
“It was a good matchup,” Upper Lake coach Sandy Coatney said. “Our weakness tonight was our passing. We pulled out setter out of position too many times, which makes it tough to get the ball to the hitters at the net.”
Like Clear Lake, Upper Lake had a pretty good night from the service line, according to Coatney.
“Our serving was good, our attitude was good,” he said. “Congrats to Marci. I”m sure she”s going to have a good season.”
In JV action Tuesday, Clear Lake won 25-19, 25-2. Logan Robinson stepped to the service line in game two with the Cardinals leading 1-0 and reeled off 20 points in a row.
