MENDOCINO — Angel Hernandez scored twice and Ivan Lopez added another goal as the Upper Lake Cougars held off a late charge by the Mendocino Cardinals to win 3-2 in non-league varsity boys” soccer action Wednesday afternoon on the Mendocino County coast.
Mendocino scored two quick goals late in the second half to throw a scare the Cougars” way, according to Upper Lake coach Kyle Moore.
“They (Cardinals) were pretty fired up and scoring those two,” Moore said. “They did give us a bit of a scare.”
Hernandez scored the only goal of the first half. Lopez and Hernandez scored in the second half to make it 3-0.
“Angel did really well,” Moore said. “He and Ivan were the standouts (on offense).”
Freshman midfielder Anthony Saldana anchored the defense, according to Moore.
“He did a real good job,” Moore said.
Upper Lake is 1-3 on the season.

Rincon Valley Christian 4, Upper Lake 1
At Upper Lake, Shayla Wyman scored in the second half with an assist from Jamie Henry but the Upper Lake Cougars fell to Rincon Valley Christian in non-league action.
Upper Lake keeper Hanna Johnson stopped 14 shots as the Cougars fell to 3-3-1 overall.
“Their goalie and defense did a beautiful job,” Upper Lake coach Mike Sheets said of the Eagles, who took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Rincon Valley increased its advantage to 3-0 in the second half before Wyman scored for the Cougars.
“It was a really nice game no matter what,” Sheets said. “Good, clean play and good, clean sportsmanship.”
The Cougars return to action Wednesday in Petaluma against St. Vincent.
