MIDDLETOWN — Nika Gibbs rallied the Middletown Mustangs past the St.Vincent Mustangs 25-21, 16-25, 20-25, 25-20, 15-12 in a non-league varsity volleyball match Thursday night in Middletown.
Rachel Sutton added six kills and six aces and Aly Mino had six kills for Middletown.
“I was proud to see the girls rally themselves back together,” Middletown coach Suzanne Riccio said. “There was a lot of encouragement out there.”
Sutton, one of the Middletown captains, helped fire up her teammate during the break between games three and four, according to Riccio.
Middletown”s junior varsity club also came away with a win, 25-21, 25-17.

Lower Lake def. Upper Lake
At Upper Lake, Lower Lake middle hitters Kelsie Shoffeitt and Adrina Miller each had 13 kills and Danacka Whittington”s overall play helped propel the Trojans to a 23-25, 25-12, 25-21, 25-8 non-league victory over the Upper Lake Cougars.
“Their two middles played well,” Upper Lake coach Sandy Coatney said. “Adrina was just pure power.”
Whittington finished with six kills and four aces while setter Shadae White added five kills and two blocks.
“Danacka did a great job all over,” Lower Lake coach Danessa Udy said. “She was playing smart, hitting the floor and being where she needed to be. It was a great effort.”
Upper Lake rallied from a 16-6 deficit to grab an 18-17 lead in game three before the Trojans came back to win it.
“We were able to capitalize on a lot of Lower Lake mistakes to win the first game,” Coatney said. “They (Trojans) played a lot better after that.”
Kat Edmonds” 12 kills and 22 digs powered the Cougars. Olivia Carter added six kills and 18 digs.
Upper Lake won the junior varsity match 25-12, 25-23.
