ESPARTO — Kelseyville jumped out to a 7-0 lead but didn”t score again in a 25-7 loss to the Esparto Trojans in non-league varsity football action on Friday night at Esparto High School.
John Mark Reagan”s 15-yard pass to Greg Fricker in the first quarter and Diego Barajas” extra-point kick staked the Knights (0-2) to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Esparto closed to 7-6 in the second quarter and pushed ahead 12-7 by returning the second-half kickoff for a touchdown.
“That was kind of a big play,” Kelseyville coach Rob Ishihara said.
The Knights answered by moving the ball into field goal range but a botched snap prevented Barajas from getting a kick off. Esparto then moved the ball down the field and scored a touchdown.
Kelseyville had other scoring chances but couldn”t convert, according to Ishihara.
“We overthrew a number of open receivers,” Ishihara said.
Geno Poloni rushed for 66 yards on 18 carries to lead the Knights.
Esparto (1-3) added to its lead in the fourth quarter, securing its first win of the season.
Game statistics were not available at press time.
Kelseyville also dropped the junior varsity game 20-14.
