The Big Read is alive and well in Lake County. In case you haven”t heard. There are many venues this fall for anyone with a passion for books and reading. A full-month of events are slated for October.

One such event was A Poe Reading at Langtry Winery last weekend. A real treat was a Poe costumed, Tom Caldecott, who graced our presence with his amazing readings from some of Edgar Allan Poe”s most treasured poems and passages. Tom”s spirit, voice and perfectly-timed inflections brought Poe to life to a rapt audience. The outdoor event was punctuated by a few blustery breezes and dark clouds (so appro-Poe), but did not dampen the spirits of listeners who enjoyed wines poured by Langtry Winery and delicious food catered by Julie Hoskins of Chic le Chef.

A big heartfelt thank you to all who make these events possible. The Big Read is sponsored by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, Arts Midwest, Lake County Office of Education and the Lake County Literacy Task Force. Many thanks to Big Read advocates: Robin Fogel-Shrive, who graciously coordinated the event with great care. Not to be left out, kudo”s to Tamsen Nash, the facilitator of Bad Girls Book clubs, Hidden Valley Lake and Cobb Mountain chapters. Tamsen is a tireless promoter of the written word in our county.

I encourage one-and-all to check out the Big Read website www.lake-coe.k12.ca.us for further information for the month in beautiful Lake County. You won”t be disappointed!
