CARMICHAEL — Led by a trio of hitters, the Clear Lake High School varsity volleyball team won the championship match in the silver bracket Saturday at the Carmichael Tournament.
Jessica Asbury, Vanessa Tullos and Anna Westin all turned in strong performances up front for the Cardinals, who went 1-2 in pool play before winning all three of their matches in the silver bracket, including a 25-22, 25-19 victory over Orland in the final match.
“They played well the last three games,” Clear Lake coach Marci Psalmonds said of her team”s silver bracket matches against Gridley (25-23, 25-21), Winters (25-10, 25-21) and Orland.
Earlier in pool play, Clear Lake opened the tournament with a 25-18, 18-25, 15-12 win over Capital Christian but then dropped matches to Central Catholic (25-21, 25-20) and Orland (25-23, 14-25, 16-14).
“We didn”t pass very well and we missed like 13 serves in each of those (pool match losses),” Psalmonds said.
Behind the hitting of Asbury (45 kills, 19 blocks for the tournament), Tullos (40 kills, 26 aces) and Westin (42 kills, 19 blocks), the Cardinals came storming back to win the silver bracket.
“Three solid hitters,” Psalmonds said. “They (opponents) didn”t know where the ball was coming from.”
Setter Morgan Psalmonds recorded 131 tournament assists and Coree Alexander anchored Clear Lake”s defense with 85 digs.
Clear Lake travels to Willits tonight for a North Central League I match.
