KELSEYVILLE — Brittany Cash and Emily Reed scored three goals apiece and Kelly Wilkinson had three assists as the Middletown Mustangs overcame a sluggish first half to beat the Kelseyville Knights 10-1 in North Central League I varsity girls” soccer action Tuesday in Kelseyville.

Hannah Diaz scored twice for the Mustangs (5-0 league, 9-1 overall), who were playing their second game in two days. They beat Roseland Prep 7-1 in non-league action Monday at Middletown behind four goals from Diaz and two from Kylie Agapoff.

“We looked very flat and sluggish in the first half,” Middletown coach Lee Hoage said of his team”s league win over Kelseyville (0-5, 0-6). “Our intensity level was not there. In the second half we did turn it up a bit, but not to the level I”d like to see.”

Agapoff and Paloma Colacion also had goals against the Knights.

While Cash was the standout on offense for the Mustangs, Hoage also praised the play of sweeper Maria Castaldo on defense.

Rachel Michel scored her first high school goal for Kelseyville.

“I thought we did a pretty good job in the first half,” Kelseyville coach Cheryl Mostin said of the 4-0 deficit the Knights faced at halftime. “They (Mustangs) were really good. I appreciate their sportsmanship.”

Shana Cossey started at keeper and played well before leaving with a muscle cramp in the second half. Freshman Jennifer Johnson replaced her and had four saves.

“It was her debut at keeper and she did well,” Mostin said.

Kelseyville”s coach also praised the play of Kenzie Gould, Elisa Borg and Tori Wayment.

In other NCL I girls” action Tuesday:

Clear Lake 5, St. Helena 2

At St. Helena, the Clear Lake Cardinals took control in the second half and beat the St. Helena Saints.

“We”ve had some weird stuff happen to us up here,” Clear Lake coach Paul Larrea said of past meetings with the Saints at St. Helena.

Clear Lake improved to 4-0-1 in league and 9-2-2 overall behind two goals each from Nadine Bradley and Kristy Hayes. Bradley”s goal 15 minutes into the second half put the Cardinals ahead to stay at 3-2.

The game was tied 2-2 at halftime.

“We played really well in the second half,” Larrea said. “We made some adjustments at halftime to our defense that paid off.”

Kelcie Reynolds and Amely Ballesteros marked two of St. Helena”s top players and shut them down, according to Larrea.

“And Chelo played well on offense and defense,” Larrea said of Chelo Lundquist-Krag, who had the Cardinals” other goal.

Hayes and Telia Paskaly had assists.

Cloverdale 7, Lower Lake 0

At Lower Lake, the Lower Lake Trojans stayed close for a half before falling to the Cloverdale Eagles.

Cloverdale led 3-0 at the intermission.

Laura Onate opened the game at keeper before moving to center-fullback in the second half, when Ana Duran took over in the net. Lower Lake coach Robynn Giese said both of her keepers did a good job as did Sami Eckhardt at center-halfback.

“She kind of holds our defense together,” Giese said of Eckhardt.

Giese also praised the play of Jennifer Pena on defense.

Boys” soccer

St. Helena 2, Clear Lake 0

At St. Helena, St. Helena scored early in each half to beat the Clear Lake Cardinals in NCL I boys” soccer action.

“Sometimes you play good and lose,” Clear Lake coach Luis Martinez said. “The whole team played pretty good.”

Clear Lake was at full strength for the first time this season, according to Martinez. The Cardinals had a chance to knot the score at 1 in the first half but Guadalupe Mendoza missed a penalty kick.

Volleyball

Upper Lake def.Tomales

At Upper Lake, after a frustrating loss to St. Vincent in their league opener on Thursday, the Upper Lake Cougars bounced back to beat the Tomales Braves and square their NCL II record at 1-1.

Kat Edmonds led the way with 11 kills while BobbieLynn Collins and Amber McQueen added six kills apiece. Ashley Lovrin had a team-high seven aces.

“It was a nice win at home,” Upper Lake coach Sandy Coatney said.

Clear Lake def. Willits

At Willits, the Clear Lake Cardinals improved to 3-0 in the NCL I volleyball standings with a quick 25-20, 25-19, 25-15 victory over the Willits Wovlerines.

Anna Westin”s eight kills and seven blocks powered the Cardinals. Jessica Asbury added eight kills and three blocks while Vanessa Tullos had three kills and three aces. Haley Garzoli chipped in with two kills.

Coree Alexander anchored the defense with 25 digs from the back row.

“Most teams have one girl to go to and we have three,” Clear Lake coach Marci Psalmonds said of Westin, Asbury and Tullos. “It”s a nice problem to have.”

St. Helena def. Lower Lake

At St. Helena, the St. Helena Saints kept pace with Clear Lake atop the NCL I standings, beating Lower Lake 25-15, 25-12, 29-27 to improve to 3-0 in league play.

“We beat them in the Healdsburg Tourney and their coach told me they (Saints) just needed time to gel,” Lower Lake coach Danessa Udy said. “After the match I told him, ?You gelled.””

Kelsie Shoffeitt”s 12 kills and four blocks led the Trojans (2-1), who got off to a slow start in the first game.

“For some reason we”re still getting first-game jitters and you can”t do that against the better teams,” Udy said.

Adrina Miller had five kills and five blocks for Lower Lake.

Lower Lake faces another tough test on Thursday when it hosts the Clear Lake Cardinals (3-0). Junior varsity action begins at 5 p.m.
