KELSEYVILLE — Robert McLean rushed for 169 yards and two touchdowns Friday night to get the Kelseyville Knights back into the win column with a 28-8 homecoming victory over the previously undefeated Ferndale Wildcats in non-league junior varsity football action at Kelseyville.

“They went undefeated last season and they were undefeated through their first three games this season,” Kelseyville coach Mike Lyndall said of the Wildcats (3-1). “That”s a real good team.”

Kelseyville (2-1) was coming off a last-second loss last weekend to Esparto, a game in which the Trojans won 20-14 by completing a long touchdown pass in the final seconds.

The Knights bounced back behind the 1-2 rushing punch of McLean and Kevin Duty, who added 103 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for one of Kelseyville”s two two-point conversions. Tyler Beach caught the other one.

Preston Herdt anchored a strong performance by the Kelseyville defense with 11 unassisted tackles and two assists. McLean was in on seven tackles while Duty and Ben Russell had six apiece.

“We really came together as a team,” Lyndall said. “Our offensive and defensive lines were just phenomenal.”

Kelseyville hosts Willits in the North Central League I opener for both teams Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Clear Lake 18, St. Vincent 7

PETALUMA — Jumping out to a 12-0 lead in the first quarter, the Clear Lake High School junior varsity football team nailed down its first victory of the season with an 18-7 non-league win over the St. Vincent Mustangs on Saturday in Petaluma.

Garrett Harwood played a major role in the win, running off-tackle for a 60-yard touchdown to open the scoring in the first quarter and sealing the Cardinals” win with an 84-yard interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. The pick thwarted a St. Vincent drive deep into Clear Lake territory with the Cardinals clinging to a 12-7 lead.

Harwood, who finished with 115 yards on 17 carries, also rushed for a 2-yard TD late in the first quarter to make it 12-0. Gabe Strong set up the scoring drive with a fumble recovery at the Clear Lake 39-yard line.

St. Vincent closed to 12-7 near the end of the first quarter on a 56-yard TD run by George Sammon. Michael Gross kicked the extra point.

Clear Lake”s defense denied St. Vincent on third-and-one and fourth-and-one runs in the second quarter after the Mustangs had used up a big chunk of the second-quarter clock with a 14-play drive that ended on downs.

Clear Lake had favorable field position throughout the third quarter but couldn”t find the end zone.

Harwood”s game-clinching interception return in the fourth quarter came on a fourth-and-five play.

“Defense was the key for us today,” Clear Lake coach Tom O”Rourke said. “St Vincent had our backs against the wall several times but our kids stepped up and made big plays every time.”

Cole Brodnansky led the way with six tackles while Strong and Jonah Wilcox had five apiece. Cory Banfill added four tackles and an interception.

Clear Lake (1-2) opens its North Central League I schedule Friday at home against the Fort Bragg Timberwolves. Kickoff is 5:30 p.m.
