Highlights
Special teams — Clear Lake”s Vince Rave sealed Clear Lake”s 21-14 league-opening win over Fort Bragg with a 32-yard punt return. While the Timberwolves were watching the ball take a high bounce, Rave snatched it out of the air and bolted down the Clear Lake sideline for what proved to be the winning score as it gave Clear Lake a 21-7 lead at the time.
Defense, defense! — Upper Lake”s Justin Robinson had the fifth and final interception for Upper Lake”s defense Saturday against South Fork. He returned the ball 95 yards for a touchdown. Adrian Perez had two sacks for Clear Lake against Fort Bragg and Dylan Finley also had two sacks for Middletown against Lower Lake. Also for Middletown, Nick Dellia had one sack and a blocked punt that resulted in a safety.
That hurts — Kelseyville”s Devin Baker and James Green, both All-Leaguers on defense for the Knights last season, left the Willits game with injuries.
No contest — In a battle of undefeated JV teams, Middletown hammered Lower Lake 40-6 in the league opener for both teams.
Those bloody screams you just heard ? — Were from the fans in Philadelphia on Sunday after watching the Eagles blow a 20-point lead and lose 24-23 to the 49ers, and after watching the Phillies fall 5-4 to the Cardinals.
He was born to torture the Raiders — New England quarterback Tom Brady.
Had a hand in them all — Kelseyville scored four touchdowns against Willits and quarterback John-Mark Reagan had a hand in them all, running for two and passing for two others.
It happens — Official Tom Malley couldn”t quite get out of the way of a pass that nicked him in the Clear Lake-Fort Bragg game Friday night in Lakeport. The reaction of the players was interesting as they all just stood around and wondered what to do after the deflected pass fell incomplete.
Losing their cool — After Clear Lake”s Vince Rave returned a punt to his own 40-yard line Friday night, the Fort Bragg Timberwolves lost their cool ? and it cost them. A helmet-to-helmet hit on Rave resulted in a 15-yard penalty and an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the same play cost them another 15, which moved the ball all the way to Fort Bragg”s 30. Jake Chapin scored on the next play to give the Cardinals the lead for good.
Yikes — Kelseyville hasn”t started a season 0-4 since the school”s 1985 team posted a Kelseyville-worst 0-9 mark that season.
C”mon UL — The team is off to a 3-1 start, not that you would know it by the number of fans in attendance Saturday afternoon. For those of you who were there, good job. For those who weren”t, where the heck were you?
Bass bowl bet — I think Lake County Supervisors Rob Brown (representing Kelseyville) and Tony Farrington (representing Lakeport) should make some sort of friendly bet as the Bass Bowl game between Kelseyville and Clear Lake approaches (the game is Nov. 4 at Lakeport). Loser gets his head shaved? Just a thought.
Just for the heck of it — All the Alex Smith haters took Sunday off because they didn”t say boo all day.
In the soccer world — Middletown (6-0) hosts Clear Lake (5-0-1) in a girls” soccer first-place showdown today in Middletown. The game completes the first half of each team”s league schedule. They meet again on Oct. 27 in the regular-season finale at Lakeport.
