Clear Lake 21, Cloverdale 0
CLOVERDALE — Garrett Harwood ran for two touchdowns and Gabe Wolfin added another rushing score on Friday night as the Clear Lake Cardinals blanked the Cloverdale Eagles 21-0 in North Central League I junior varsity football action at Cloverdale.
Clear Lake is 1-1 in NCL I action and 2-3 overall.
Damin Lopez returned a punt 25 yards to set up Clear Lake”s first touchdown in the opening quarter. Six plays later it was Harwood breaking free on a third-and-five play and covering the 15 yards to the end zone. Logan Brodnansky”s extra-point kick made it 7-0.
Clear Lake pushed its advantage to 14-0 on a Wolfin 11-yard run that capped a six-minute, 84-yard drive in the second quarter.
The Cardinals added to their lead on Harwood”s 56-yard run in the third quarter.
Clear Lake controlled the ball much of the fourth period but didn”t score.
Harwood finished with 115 yards on 11 carries and Wolfin ended up with 100 yards on 11 carries.
“Our best performance on offense this season, no question about it,” Clear Lake coach Tom O”Rourke said. “Our line did a great job of assignment blocking and with (Nathan) Powers blocking from the fullback position, it allowed our backs to make big plays. It was nice to have two ballcarriers hit the 100-yard mark.”
Powers also had seven tackles to lead the Clear Lake defense.
“Defensively we were as aggressive as we”ve been all season and it showed. Cloverdale threatened a couple of times in the second half, but our kids wanted that shutout and we held them each time,” O”Rourke said.
Clear Lake hosts Willits this Friday at 5:30 p.m.
Tomales 26, Upper Lake 0
UPPER LAKE — The Tomales Braves beat the Upper Lake Cougars 26-0 in the North Central League II junior varsity football opener for both teams on Saturday in Upper Lake.
“We played very well in the beginning of the game,” Upper Lake coach Billy Binns said. “Our defense was getting us the stops we need. We had a few opportunities to score in the first half but we couldn”t take advantage of them.
Hunter Ables rushed for 74 yards on eight carries to lead the Cougars (0-1 league, 1-4 overall).
Tomales took a 12-0 lead into halftime.
“We came out and were moving the ball really well (in the second half), but then we had some penalties and it set us back,” Binns said. “They were not 26-0 better than us. I think if we come in with some energy and play four quarters we can beat this team the next time we see them.”
Alex Solario anchored the Upper Lake defense with seven total tackles. Kyron Lane added five tackles and a fumble recovery.
“We got Kyron to come out a few weeks ago and he”s caught on very quickly,” Binns said. “I”m excited to see what he will be able to do for us once he gets a little more work.”
