WITTER SPRINGS — Emergency personnel Monday responded to a fatal car crash on Highway 20 west of Witter Springs Road, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

CHP Dispatch received a 9-1-1 call at 11 a.m. indicating a solo-vehicle crash in the area, and first responders soon found a yellow 2012 Chevrolet Corvette down an embankment.

The vehicle appeared to be traveling westbound on Highway 20 when the driver failed to negotiate a right curve and drove the Corvette off of the south side of the road, the CHP reported.

After leaving the roadway, the car hit an oak tree, ejecting the driver.

The driver, an unidentified 40-year-old man from Portland, Maine, sustained fatal injuries. An unidentified female passenger, 43, also from Maine sustained major injuries and was transported by REACH to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.

The CHP reported that speed appears to have been a factor but the crash, which may have occurred Sunday night, remains under investigation.
