CLEARLAKE — Caltrans announced Wednesday that $66 million in funding has been awarded for 139 regional Safe Routes to Schools (SRTS) projects, including for two schools in Clearlake.
SRTS projects seek to improve safety for student pedestrians and cyclists.
“By improving safety, more children are encouraged to walk and bicycle to school, ultimately resulting in healthier children and less traffic congestion,” Caltrans acting director Malcolm Dougherty said. The two Clearlake schools, Burns Valley Elementary and Clearlake SDA Christian, will receive $321,400 to widen a roadway and install bike lanes and crosswalks. The federal SRTS program provided the funding. Caltrans has awarded $156 million for 356 SRTS projects since 2005.
