FORT BRAGG — Jorge Garcia scored a goal in each half and the Kelseyville Knights, enjoying one of their best seasons in years, held off the Fort Bragg Timberwolves 2-1 in a North Central League I varsity boys” soccer game Tuesday in Fort Bragg.

Garcia”s first goal, which came in the 25th minute, knotted the score at 1. His second goal, which came just three minutes into the second half, proved to be the game-winner.

Oscar Martinez picked up assists on each of Garcia”s goals.

“They played pretty well,” Kelseyville coach Eduardo Ledesma said of the Knights.

Kelseyville is now 8-2-1 in league play and 10-4-1 overall.

“We changed up our defense a little bit,” Ledesma said. “We pulled it back and counterattacked.”

Wences Rojas and Oscar Lopez anchored another strong effort by the Kelseyville defense.

Kelseyville resumes its NCL I schedule Thursday in Middletown.

St. Helena 5, Middletown 3

At Middletown, turning in one of their best efforts of the season, the Middletown Mustangs battled the St. Helena Saints before dropping a hard-fought NCL I contest.

“I know we have a couple of ties, but this is our best game of the season,” Middletown coach Chuck Rannells said of the loss to the Saints, among the top teams in the league.

While Middletown has yet to win a game on the field (the Mustangs did pick up a forfeit win over Lower Lake because of the use of an ineligible player), Rannells said the Mustangs played well on all fronts against the Saints.

“Our overall passing was awesome,” Rannells said.

St. Helena opened up a 2-0 lead early in the first half before Middletown battled back to tie it on goals by Eric Lopez and Raphael Roy-Labelle.

Two defensive breakdowns late in the first half allowed the Saints to move out to a 4-2 lead by halftime, according to Rannells.

Jesus Garcia scored in the second half for Middletown.

Joseph Foster”s play on defense stood out, according to Rannells.

“He was 100 percent all over the place,” Rannells said. “And Garcia did a great job at midfield/defense.”
