Norm Benson asked “will living simply save the world?” The question is moot, for the simple reason that it is human nature to want more of everything. Those in the third world (population-wise the largest group) want what the rich countries enjoy, it”s human nature. As the global population grows exponentially at some point growth becomes unsustainable. The planet earth is, as a matter of fact, finite.
The human race has never been at this point before. In the past technology has saved us and cheap has done our work.
Unless technology continues to stay ahead of the curve and viable renewable energy sources are developed, things are going to become very uncomfortable on planet earth. Norm is an optimist. I try to be a realist. I”m sure that we will both be very interested as we watch the future unfold.
Also a word on the Wall Street protests: Our economic system requires a balance between the interests of capital and the interests of labor, the one needs the other.
The Wall Street protesters are stating the obvious: the system is out of balance.
The tilt toward capital has become so great that ordinary citizens are in the streets. One may ask “what solutions do the protesters suggest?”
Solutions to the complex problem of restoring balance is the job of government and are beyond the ability and responsibility of the people in the street. The protesters are saying they are hurting because the balance has tilted against them. All we can do is vote, and that hasn”t been making much of a difference lately.
Congress has sold out to capital. The Supreme Court has given corporations personhood. Many Americans believe that FOX news is fair and balanced. I grieve for our country.
