CLEARLAKE — No injuries resulted from a head-on collision Friday around 2:55 p.m. on 18th Avenue at Phillips Avenue in Clearlake involving a passenger vehicle and a Konocti Unified School District (KUSD) bus. Children on the bus were released to their parents from the scene.
At about 2:55 p.m. Friday, Theresa Estay, 53, of Clearlake was traveling in a loaded school bus eastbound on 18th Avenue. Augustine Ochoa, 21, of Clearlake was traveling westbound on 18th Avenue approaching Phillips Avenue in an area with limited visibility. According to Ochoa, the school bus attempted a left hand turn onto Phillips Avenue in front of him and his Eclipse struck the right front of the bus head-on.
Dana Moore, KUSD maintenance supervisor, said the school bus is repairable. He said after repairs are complete, California Highway Patrol (CHP) will inspect the bus before it is put back into operation.
Lake County Fire Protection District, Clearlake Police Department and CHP responded to the scene. Because the incident involved a school bus, investigation of the incident will be handled by the CHP.
