LAKEPORT — Kyle Donald did the damage from the outside while Adrian Perez worked over Anderson Valley down low Tuesday night as the Clear Lake Cardinals opened a new varsity boys” basketball season with a 82-48 victory in non-league action at Lakeport.

“Kyle Donald shot the ball very well,” Clear Lake coach Glenn Wienke said of Donald”s team-leading 23-point effort. “Adrian Perez (18 points) played a really strong inside game.”

Clear Lake led 26-9 after one quarter and put the game away with a 22-12 third quarter.

Gabe Strong, a 6-foot-5 sophomore center, scored nine points in his varsity debut.

“He came out and did a good job,” Wienke said.

All 10 Cardinals scored in the season opener.

The difference in the game was a 19-11 third quarter by the Lions, who play man-to-man pressure defense.

“We made a few mistakes in that quarter that cost us,” Middletown coach Tony Hart said.

Middletown (0-2) closed to within six points of El Molino in the final minutes but couldn”t overtake the Lions on their home floor.

El Molino led 15-14 at the half.
