LAKE COUNTY — Kyle Brown of Middletown High School and Cory Johnson of Kelseyville High School are this year”s $1,000 college scholarship recipients after being honored by the Lake-Mendocino Branch of the Northern California Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.
Brown and Johnson will be honored along with other Northern California branch winners during an awards banquet Feb. 23 at the Burlingame Airport Marriott on 1800 Old Bayshore Highway.
Only high school seniors are eligible for the award, which is based on performance in the classroom and on the playing field as well as community service. Players are nominated by their respective schools and placed into one of two categories ? backs or linemen. A panel of judges review each player”s application form and accompanying school transcripts and letters of recommendation.
Six high schools from the Lake-Mendocino Branch nominated players this year. The nominees were Brown of Middletown, Devin Baker of Kelseyville, Luke Morris of Potter Valley, Robert Simondi of Upper Lake and Joe Sasso of Willits in the backs category, and Johnson of Kelseyville, Joseph Adams of Potter Valley, Addison Eaquinto of Ukiah and Bruce Tucker of Upper Lake in the linemen category.
Forty-percent of the award is based on GPA, 30 percent on athletic ability, and 30 percent on community service.
The voting was close in both categories.
Brown, a two-way starter for the Mustangs, opened the season at quarterback for Middletown before later moving to wide receiver. He also earned All-North Central League I first-team honors as a defensive back.
Johnson was an All-League first-team lineman for the Knights.
