Let us begin in knowing that the change we seek will not come with legislation which is not to say that laws passed for the common good are altogether unnecessary and useless. This simply means that laws in the absence of an ethical compass will not in and of themselves make the world a better and safer place to live.
If we look to government to create a more reasonable planet, we are looking in the wrong place. We need to look inside ourselves for what we are seeking and look to those around us to share the grace of goodness where and when we find it.
In an atmosphere of greed and narcissism, it is up to each of us to be accountable to each other and to reward those who act with high and selfless principal while reproving of those who operate without regard for how the consequences of their actions may injure other people.
We can never elect a body of people to entrust with the safe keeping of our ideals. It is a duty that comes with citizenship to hold those we elect accountable to the ideals for which we elected them.
A government if it is to be representative must in good faith provide for a full redress of grievances without fear of repression. Any government or agency that ceases to act in the spirit of fairness that created it, should forfeit its right to represent and relinquish its power unless it is prepared to live up to its obligation as a representative body. The people should in all cases with respect to matters of government maintain their sovereignty.
No individual elected to serve in the public interest should profit from the said duties of that service other than to receive a salary for their work. There should be no special privilege afforded those elected to public service other than their wage. Individuals chosen by a society to serve as their representatives should consider it a sacred trust and should in all their actions protect that trust. Representatives found to have violated this trust should through due process be removed from office.
The quest for money and power when found to be in conflict with one”s duty as representative of the people should not be tolerated in a society that charters its representatives with purity of intention. Using one”s position for the pursuit of private gain at the expense of public duty should be considered criminal.
Take heart that change has begun in the belly of the beast that in its blind lust for power, ate well from the table it set for us and whose stomach has begun to ache. Demagoguery is its own greatest enemy and inevitably perishes by its own hand.
Know that no amount of darkness can extinguish even the faintest light of hope and in the end, good will always triumph because that is the universal guiding law that stirs the stars and is the very essence of life.
The goodness of the universe is the heart of life and love is its breath and as long as that heart beats with love, life will flourish.
Happy Holidays!
