LOWER LAKE — Kelsie Shoffeitt went from goat to hero in a matter of seconds Wednesday night as the Lower Lake Trojans edged the Middletown Mustangs 41-39 in the consolation championship game of the Lady Trojans Winter Classic at Lower Lake High School.

Lower Lake (9-3) had a 39-36 late in the fourth quarter when Shoffeitt fouled Middletown”s Rachel Sutton, who was in the process of shooting the ball. Sutton made the shot and the ensuing free throw to tie the score at 39.

With time running out, Shoffeitt worked her way down low and scored on a short jumper to provide the winning margin.

“We never could get into our offense,” Lower Lake coach Jim Salmina said. “And they (Mustangs) did a better job of breaking the press than we did pressing.”

Foul trouble in the first half slowed the Trojans, who led 24-16 at halftime. Lower Lake held that same eight-point lead — 30-22 — going to the fourth quarter.

April White”s 15 points and nine rebounds led Lower Lake. Sutton”s 12 points paced the Mustangs (3-8).

Vintage, the only team to beat Lower Lake in the tournament, ended up winning the championship with 57-43 victory over Northgate.
