I am a friend of Lake County and a subscriber to the Record-Bee. All my life I have benefited from a Bachelor”s degree from the University of California, Berkeley, which would not be available to me under today”s social, political and upside-down economic systems.

Read carefully. Read critically. Apply logic. Connect the dots.

This is regarding commentary by Bill Woodruff that appeared in last Thursday”s Record-Bee.

There is much I do not know, so please pardon any ignorance.

Comparing private corporations to public service: What other services should be privatized? Schools? Police and fire? Jails and prisons? The courts? All medical? City and county government? Those who can afford the best, get the best.

Vouchers: Sure. Like then-Governor Reagan released the mentally ill from state hospitals and then subsidized private homes for the mentally ill. And then the subsidies went away. Where do you find the mentally ill today? On the streets with additional problems.

Woodruff: “Twice as much per student, public vs. private schools?” and “I”m all for teachers … good income …?”

Does anyone know how little most private schools pay teachers, starting with Catholic schools?

Department of education: Anyone aware that one of then-President Reagan”s goals with Bennett, was to eliminate the Department of Education? I think such efforts continue today.

No more being bothered by Brown v. Board of Education, or other pesky rules.

Woodruff states, “A vital education system is crucial …”

Not vital if your goal is to maintain your political power by continuing to dumb-down your citizens, plus finding other ways to discourage them from voting at all.

Woodruff states, “Should be managed at the county level.”

Yeah, sure.

Anyone want to guess the quality of education in Lake County as compared to Marin County under such a system?

Still a few of us left who believe in the common good, of each of us contributing toward the betterment of all of us.
