LAYTONVILLE — Clear Lake never recovered from an 18-6 first quarter and fell 64-54 to the Laytonville Warriors in a non-league varsity boys” basketball game on Saturday in Laytonville.

It was the third meeting between the two teams this season and Laytonville”s second straight win. The Warriors, a member of the North Central League III, are 10-4 this season while Clear Lake, a member of the NCL I, is 8-5.

“They”re having a decent year,” Clear Lake coach Glenn Wienke said of the Warriors, who were led by Dylan Rosenthal”s 18 points and Colby Kelley”s 17.

Clear Lake, a 66-60 loser to Cloverdale a night earlier in Cloverdale, didn”t respond well to the back-to-back road games on consecutive days.

“We didn”t score our eighth point until midway through the second quarter,” Wienke said.

Laytonville led 35-20 at the intermission.

“Nothing ? nothing was dropping for us and everything they threw up they made,” Wienke said.

While Laytonville did its job, the Cardinals need to do some things better and that may require shaking up the lineup, according to Wienke.

“We may make some personnel adjustments,” Wienke said.

Kyle Donald”s 14 points paced the Cardinals, Adrian Perez added 12 and Steven Edwards had 10.

Wienke had high praise for the play of Nathan Harper, one of two sophomores called up to the varsity at the end of last month.

“He played a really good game on defense,” Wienke said. “He”s starting to grow as a player and it”s fun to watch.”

Harper finished with four points.

Clear Lake hosts Willits in NCL I action tonight. Junior varsity action begins at 5:30 p.m.
