LAKEPORT — Hardly missing a beat — or a shot — were the Clear Lake Cardinals in their 80-70 victory over the Willits Wolverines on Tuesday night in Lakeport.

The North Central League I varsity boys” basketball victory lifts the Cardinals to 2-1 in the league standings and 9-5 overall.

Clear Lake had five players score in double figures, led by Kyle Donald”s 23.

The Cardinals” pressure defense in the first half beat the Wolverines (1-2) at their own game, according to Clear Lake coach Glenn Wienke.

“We applied a lot of ball pressure the enter game and we tried (successfully) to keep them out of their half-court press, which is what they beat Middletown with,” Wienke said.

Clear Lake fashioned a 43-28 lead by halftime and went on to score more points than the Wolverines had allowed in a single game all season (they”re previous worst was 68).

“We”ve been knocked down the last couple of games but we got up tonight,” Wienke said.

Steven Edwards scored 17 points and drew Wienke”s praise.

“Best overall game as my point (guard) in three years,” Wienke said.

Gabe Strong added 12 points while Danny Partida and Adrian Perez each had 11. Partida was 3-for-4 from 3-point range.

Jon Montez scored 30 points to lead Willits.
