CLOVERDALE — Max Huff scored 20 points, including all 12 of Kelseyville”s points in the second quarter, and the Knights parlayed a strong effort on defense into a 56-40 win over the Cloverdale Eagles in North Central League I varsity boys” basketball action Tuesday night in Cloverdale.
“He carried us in the second quarter,” Kelseyville coach Scott Conrad said of the senior Huff, who now has 970 career points.
“It was a real sluggish game on offense, but on defense we did a good enough job not to let them have any runs,” Conrad added. “It was a team effort.”
Kelseyville, atop the NCL I standings at 3-0 and now 12-3 overall, led 16-9 after one quarter and 28-16 at halftime.
Devon Call joined Huff in double figures with 12 points and both Wyatt Ferrell and Dustin Thaxton added eight points apiece.
In other boys” action Tuesday:
St. Helena 61, Lower Lake 49
At Lower Lake, the St. Helena Saints built a 36-13 halftime lead en route to beating the Lower Lake Trojans in NCL I action.
“We just came out unmotivated and turned the ball over a lot,” Lower Lake coach David Graham said. “We chipped away in the second half and were able to make it a little more respectful.”
Jesse Meldrum”s 13 points paced Lower Lake (0-3, 0-13), Alphonzos Daniels added 12 and Jeff Davis had nine.
Alec Fetzer”s 21 points powered St. Helena (2-1).
Sonoma Academy 64, Upper Lake 37
At Santa Rosa, down to six players, the Upper Lake Cougars fell to Sonoma Academy in NCL II action.
Sonoma Academy outscored Upper Lake 25-3 in the first quarter and never looked back.
“They came out firing,” Upper Lake coach Christopher Cisneros said of the Coyotes. “We were getting plenty of shots, but we didn”t make very many. Our shooting percentage is the thing that”s killing us now.”
Upper Lake (0-4, 2-11) played better in the second half, outscoring Sonoma Academy 29-27.
Dean Reimers” 10 points paced the Cougars, Jared Wade added eight an Dakota Fallai had seven.
Austin Orr”s 20 points led Sonoma Academy.
Girls” basketball
Lower Lake 50, St. Helena 36
At St. Helena, St. Helena had no answer inside for Lower Lake”s April White and Kelsie Shoffeitt and the Trojans improved to 3-0 in the NCL I standings with a win over the Saints.
“Kelsie and April dominated inside,” Lower Lake coach Jim Salmina said. “They had no one to match up with them.”
White finished with 17 points, 18 rebounds and six steals as the Trojans improved to 12-3 on the season. Shoffeitt added 12 points and 19 rebounds.
Lower Lake had a 31-21 lead by halftime.
Sonoma Academy 55, Upper Lake 21
At Santa Rosa, Son-oma Academy point guard Kate Bayes scored 26 points to lead the Coyotes past the Upper Lake Cougars in NCL II action.
Sonoma Academy (3-1, 15-1) opened the season with 14 straight wins before falling 40-39 to St. Vincent on Friday. The Coyotes limited the Cougars (2-2, 7-7) to 15 points through three quarters and led 47-15 entering the final period.
“We beat ourselves way before they beat us,” Upper Lake coach Mike Smith said. “The effort was not as strong as I would have liked for the entire game.”
Kat Edmonds” eight points, 18 rebounds (10 offensive) and five steals led the Cougars.
The game was originally scheduled to take place in Upper Lake but was moved to Santa Rosa because of finals week at Sonoma Academy.
Fort Bragg 47, Middletown 41
At Fort Bragg, the Middletown Mustangs couldn”t hold a 35-29 lead going into the fourth quarter and lost to the Fort Bragg Timberwolves in NCL I action.
Fort Bragg (1-2) outscored Middletown 18-6 in the final period, going 9-for-12 from the free-throw line in the process.
“That was the difference in the game right there,” Middletown coach Tony Hart said. “We just get a little nervous in the fourth quarter and don”t put the game away. We can”t shoot with any kind of consistency.”
Amber Hart and Marie Crim scored nine points apiece to lead Middletown (0-3, 3-11). Ashley Hart added five points in her first varsity game.
Cloverdale 57, Kelseyville 35
At Kelseyville, the Cloverdale Eagles pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat the Kelseyville Knights in NCL I play.
Kelseyville (0-3, 2-9) stayed within range of Cloverdale (3-0) through three quarters before the Eagles broke loose in the final period.
Mary Brown and Kyra Rudnick scored 10 points apiece for Kelseyville. The Knights also received strong play inside from Jeannie Johnson, who had seven points and 12 rebounds, and Shannon Fontana, who added two points and 12 rebounds.
“They played really tough on the boards,” Kelseyville coach Christina Taylor said of Johnson and Fontana.
Willits 79, Clear Lake 42
At Willits, the Willits Wolverines kept pace with Lower Lake and Cloverdale atop the NCL I standings with a win over the Clear Lake Cardinals.
Willits, Lower Lake and Cloverdale all share the league lead at 3-0.
Jessica Asbury and Morgan Psalmonds had 10 points apiece for the Cardinals (1-2, 4-5), who trailed 49-13 at halftime.
Whitney Dunham”s 23 points led the Wolverines.
