Public, Education and Government (PEG) television has been around since the late 1970s.
There have been many attempts over the years to do away with it, but it has survived and become a vital and necessary part of nearly every community in the country.
It serves as a link to a variety of services that are not available by any other means. It allows the public a voice and a place where every opinion counts and may be expressed, whether we like it or not.
It provides vital information to seniors and many others who might not have access to that information from any other source. It offers educational resources that are not available anywhere else for many people. It also provides transparency in local government, which allows for a more informed community that can make intelligent choices based on real facts and information. It is a valuable resource, which should be used and appreciated by all.
Of late, there has been a great deal of controversy regarding Channel 8.
I would like to clear the air about a few things. Controversy will always play a major role in PEG television. It is a vital part of why PEG exists. Controversy usually leads to action, which makes things happen and allows for change and growth within the community.
There will always be those who would attempt to use or misuse PEG for their own agenda. There will always be disgruntled former employees and volunteers.
These are passionate, creative people who believe in their community and care deeply about its future. It is the responsibility of PEG to provide a place where every individual has a voice, even one that sheds negative light upon itself.
Passion and creativity has everything to do with PEG TV. Without it there would be no need for PEG.
The fact that there is controversy is proof that PEG works. It is reaching out and generating interest in the community like never before.
It is uniting some and dividing others, but one thing is certain, PEG has the attention of the community, without which it could not survive.
It has been suggested that the content is all about marijuana, the actual percentage of marijuana-related content is lower than that of the History Channel or the Discovery Channel.
Rather, there are many entertaining and informative programs, most produced by local citizens.
I hope I have been able shed some positive light on all of the hearsay about Channel 8. If you have something to add feel free to contact me at joeltv8@gmail.com or call me at 272-1136.
