CORNING — Clear Lake High School”s Ryan Blyleven won a 4-2 decision in overtime in the 123-pound championship match Saturday at the Corning Invitational in Corning.
“In my five years of coming up here the only other guy I know who has finished first there is Robbie Avery,” Clear Lake coach Ronnie Campos said of the former Upper Lake star. “And Robbie was probably the best wrestler ever to come out of this area in my opinion.”
The tournament, which features a 32-man bracket, awards medals down to eight places in all weight divisions.
“Finishing first at that tournament is a big accomplishment,” Campos said of Blyleven, who is 23-2 on the season. “He”s going to Shasta College next year to wrestle and his coach was there watching him. I”m thrilled for Ryan. I”m proud of him.”
Blyleven”s first-place medal wasn”t the only medal that went home with the Cardinals.
Raul Rendon added a third-place medal at 185 pounds while Rick Pierson (123), Gabe Wolfin (129) and Mike Reynolds (198) finished seventh in their respective weight classes.
