Several folks have taken exception to my letter to the editor in the Lake County Record-Bee concerning the ability of corporations to exercise the right to free speech under a recent Supreme Court case.
As some may know, unions were also given the same rights for the same reason: they, too, express the views of their members and advocate for those things that will benefit their members.
I see no difference.
Both should have the absolute right to speak about things that concern them. Both should have the same opportunity of free speech.
As retired person who lives on Social Security and income from an IRA, which invests in the securities of American businesses, I want business to express views on my behalf that will be of benefit to me.
I see no difference between the unions spending many millions to express their views or a corporation expressing theirs.
While I usually do not agree with union positions, I would never take away its right to express its views.
Freedom of speech is for all and must not be taken away from any.
