LAKEPORT — The Sierra Club Lake Group saluted residents who volunteer in Highland Springs by donating funds to their cause Tuesday.

“Our Sierra Club is supportive of volunteer efforts on behalf of the environment, and feel fortunate to be able to contribute to those volunteers at Highland Springs who have worked diligently and so successfully at trail-building and preserving the ecosystems of the area,” outgoing chairperson Cheri Holden stated in an email Wednesday.

Holden presented a $500 check to members and supporters of the Highland Springs Volunteer Group during the Lake County Board of Supervisors (BOS) meeting Tuesday morning in Lakeport.

In other business at the Lake County Courthouse, the BOS approved of the county jail getting new security cameras.

The move provides “more eyes and ears” for officials at the Lake County Hill Road Correctional Facility, according to undersheriff Patrick Turturici.

“It”s time to upgrade our cameras,” he told the supervisors Tuesday.

The current proposal does not pertain to all of the improvements planned for the jail”s video-monitoring system, Turturici added.

Correctional staff reportedly received four informal bids, with Polestar Computers of Kelseyville as the sole local vendor and the only company able to provide and install the equipment.

The BOS voted 4-0 to waive the formal bidding process (after finding the waiver would produce no economic benefit to the county), approve a budget transfer to accommodate the deal and authorize a $28,277 purchase order for buying and installing the cameras.

District 2 Supervisor Jeff Smith was absent from the meeting.

BOS Chair Rob Brown said he supported the move because it would help protect jail workers and detainees and could reduce liability claims against the county.

Earlier in the meeting, the supervisors approved of calling an unnamed Middletown road Cascio Way.

Located off of Jerusalem Grade Road more than a quarter-mile north of the Soda Creek crossing, Cascio Way is named for a family that owns property along it, according to County Surveyor Gordon Haggitt.

The new name became effective immediately after receiving BOS approval, Haggitt said.
