MIDDLETOWN — Kyle Brown scattered two hits over four innings and struck out eight Monday afternoon as the Middletown Mustangs beat the Upper Lake Cougars 18-1 in a non-league varsity baseball game at Wes Martin Field.
Middletown coach Mitch Tucker said he entertained the idea of holding back his No. 1 starter for today”s home game against Elsie Allen, but with a chance of rain in the forecast he decided to start Brown against the Cougars (0-2).
“I didn”t want to leave my No. 1 in the dugout and wait for tomorrow (Elsie Allen game),” Tucker said.
Brown threw just 54 pitches in the four innings while improving to 1-1 on the season.
“He kept the ball down in the strike zone,” Tucker said.
Logan Smith went 3-for-4 with two RBI and scored three times as Middletown (1-2) posted its first win of the season. Brad Bologna went 2-for-2 with a double, three runs and five RBI while both Luke Humphrey (1-for-3) and Jake Tucker (1-for-4) drove in three runs apiece.
“I was glad to see Brad Bologna fill that four spot and drive in five runs,” Tucker said.
Bologna hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning, singled home two more runs in the second and had a two-run double during a seven-run fourth.
