MIDDLETOWN — Blaine Amos struck out nine in six innings while Logan Smith went 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBI on Tuesday as the Middletown Mustangs won their second game in as many days, 12-1 over Elsie Allen in non-league varsity baseball action at Middletown.

Amos worked out of early trouble to stop the Lobos on one run and two hits. Brad Bologna relieved and pitched the seventh.

“He got himself out of trouble a couple of times,” Middletown coach Mitch Tucker said of Amos, who had runners at second and third with no outs in the top of the first.

Amos escaped the jam by getting a shallow fly ball to center field, a comebacker and a strikeout to end the inning.

“He beared down when he needed to,” Tucker added.

Middletown (2-2) had a 5-0 lead before Elsie Allen scored its lone run in the top of the fifth. The Mustangs answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning and added five more in the sixth.

Smith and Reid Carpenter each had had three hits for the Mustangs. Carpenter doubled twice and scored three times. Other leaders at the plate were Amos, who went 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and two runs, and Jake Tucker, who went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.

The bottom three hitters in the Middletown batting order — Cody Rains, Carpenter and Amos — were a combined 7-for-11 with three doubles, five runs and three RBI.

Middletown returns to action Friday against El Molino at Forestville.
