UPPER LAKE — After hitting a grand slam in her first high school softball game on Friday against Lower Lake, Upper Lake High School freshman LaShaye Taylor had a tough act to follow Tuesday against the Potter Valley Bearcats.

As things played out, it was no problem. Taylor (4-for-4) hit for the cycle, including a three-run home run, and drove in nine runs overall as the Cougars routed the Bearcats 40-9 in a non-league game mercifully called after 4 1/2 innings because of the 10-run rule.

Upper Lake (2-0) rolled up 33 hits, including a grand slam and five RBI from Vanessa Hanson (5-for-6), while matching its entire victory total from last season.

“I tried to get everybody in and almost everyone had a hit,” Upper Lake coach Kelly Coburn said.

The Cougars scored 13 runs in each of the second and third innings.

Taylor, Amber McQueen, Kat Edmonds, Kate Irwin and Shayla Wyman had four hits apiece for Upper Lake.

Upper Lake scrimmages at Kelseyville today. The Cougars” next game is March 16 at Anderson Valley.
